The SIMATIC S7-1200 controller is modular and compact, versatile, a secure investment, and is powerfully fit for a full range of applications. A scalable and flexible design, a communication interface that fulfills the highest standards of industrial communication and a full range of powerful integrated technology functions make this controller an integral part of a complete and comprehensive automation solution.
Scalable and Flexible Design
Up to eight Signal Modules can be connected to the largest CPUs. One Signal Board can be connected to all CPUs, allowing you to customize the CPUs by adding digital or analog I/O to the controller without affecting its physical size. The modular concept provided by the
SIMATIC S7- 1200 allows you to design a controller system to exactly fit your application needs.
Memory
Up to 50 KB of integrated work memory is provided with a floating boundary between the user program and user data. Up to 2 MB of integrated load memory and 2 KB of integrated retentive memory are also provided.
Communication
Up to 3 Communication Modules can be added to any of the SIMATIC S7-1200 CPUs. The RS485 and RS232 Communication Modules provide the connection for performing Point-to-Point serial communication. This communication is configured and programmed using extended instructions or with the library functions, USS drive protocol and Modbus RTU Master and Slave protocols, which are included within the STEP 7 Basic engineering system.
Integrated PROFINET Interface
The integrated PROFINET interface is used for programming, as well as for Siemens HMI and PLC-to-PLC communication. Additionally, it supports communication with third-party devices using open Ethernet protocols. This interface features an RJ45 connector with auto-crossover functionality and provides for data transmission rates at 10/100
Mbit/s. It supports up to 16 Ethernet connections and the following protocols: TCP/IP native, ISO on TCP, and S7-Communication.
Integrated Technology Functions

The ability to integrate powerful Siemens Controller
CPUs with Industrial Ethernet/PROFINET interface, integrated
technological functions, or fail-safe designs make additional
investments unnecessary.
The S7-300
can be set up in a modular configuration without the need for
slot rules for I/O modules. There is a wide range of modules
available both for the centralized and the distributed
configuration with
ET 200M.
The Micro Memory Card as a data and program memory makes a
backup battery superfluous, and with it, part of the
maintenance costs. In addition, an associated project,
including symbols and comments, can be stored on this memory
card to facilitate service calls.
The Micro Memory Card also enables simple program or
firmware updates. The
Micro Memory Card can be used during operation for

The S7-400 PLC is especially suitable for data-intensive tasks in the process industry. High processing speeds and deterministic response times guarantee short machine cycle times on highspeed machines in the manufacturing industry. The highspeed backplane bus of
S7-400 ensures efficient linking of central I/O modules. The
S7-400 PLC is used preferably to coordinate overall plants and to control lower-level communications lines with slave stations; this is guaranteed by the high communication power and the integral interfaces. The power of the
Simatic S7-400 PLC is scalable thanks to a graded range of
S7-400 CPUs; the capacity for I/O is almost unlimited. The power reserves of the
S7 400 CPUs enable new functions to be integrated without further hardware investment, e.g. processing of quality data, user-friendly diagnosis, integration into higher-level MES solutions or high-speed communication via bus systems. The
